“I have worked with Rochelle on a very difficult case that has been ongoing for several years. Her persistence in keeping things moving and her challenging of plaintiff’s counsel have shown that she is not afraid to do what it takes to get results.” -AVP National Accounts Casualty Claims, Arch Insurance Group
When Rochelle Mayfield was an elementary school student in Charlotte she wrote a biography expressing her childhood dreams of being a cheerleader and a lawyer. Not only was she on the cheering squad in middle and high school, but she started her law career early. Through a high school internship program, she began working as a mailroom assistant at Hedrick Gardner and continued through her freshman year at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. While in law school at North Carolina Central University she clerked at Hedrick Gardner.
Today, Rochelle is Special Counsel in Hedrick Gardner’s Charlotte office where she focuses her practice on workers’ compensation defense and appellate advocacy. She represents insurance carriers, self-insured businesses, and employers in a wide range of business sectors including food services, trucking and transportation, manufacturing and healthcare. She also has experience representing municipalities. Her practice involves all areas of workers’ compensation defense, including, but not limited to injury by accident and specific traumatic incident claims, occupational disease claims, and death claims.
Rochelle tailors her handling of each case to meet the client’s needs and goals, whether by early resolution or strong defense at hearing. She frequently gives continuing education presentations to clients on various topics of interest in the area of workers’ compensation. Rochelle also serves as a mentor to junior attorneys in the Charlotte office and they look to her for advice on practice tips and work-life balance.
Rochelle enjoys volunteering with Legal Aid of North Carolina, where she provides monthly consultations in the area of employment law and helps clients file EEOC claims. She also regularly volunteers with the NCBA’s 4ALL Statewide Service Day, and the Hands on Charlotte Annual Attorney Service Day. Rochelle is an active member of the North Carolina State Bar, the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, and the Mecklenburg County Bar Association. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Family is important to Rochelle and her husband Diarra. They enjoy spending time with their daughter Nyla and other family members who live close by. Rochelle enjoys photography, and her family counts on her to capture their precious moments together. Her husband is a well-known Charlotte DJ (“The Mighty DJ DR”) who often spins tunes at local venues, including events hosted by Hedrick Gardner. In her spare time, Rochelle enjoys going to the movies, shopping, and traveling to warm, tropical destinations with clear water and sunny days.
